Dreamville Records is a music label founded by Jermaine Cole (better known as J.Cole), who hails from Fayetteville, North Carolina. In an attempt to put NC on the map and give back to the state, J.Cole brought his talented team of artists under his label (Earthgang, JID, etc.) as well as some other major artists (SZA, Big Sean, Meek Mill) to perform at his festival. The Dreamville Festival 2019 was held in Raleigh's Dorothea Dix Park, and was one of the largest events to ever take place in the state.
NC State's College of Design was asked to create a team to be part of the experience by creating a mural that would be featured on the festival grounds. As part of the team, we had to create a 8x10 ft. mural that would be on display for all 40,000 attendants to view.
Inspiration
Our piece was based off of the concept of J.Cole's most recent Album KOD. In the album, Cole speaks on the temptations of drugs and money for today's youth. Our art style was also based off of the Dreamville Festival branding.
CHOOSE WISELY Lens
My main contribution to this team was working with Cole Ferguson to create a virtual experience to go along with the mural. Using snapchat and Lens Studio, Cole and I were able to make two lenses, one facing the mural and the other facing the user. We also based our lenses off of the concept of J.Cole's latest album and the festival branding. We chose to work with the phrase "CHOOSE WISELY" because it comes off of J.Cole's album, and it represents the overall aesthetic of our design.
Cole's mural lens in action
My lens, which faced the user, was a combination of a face lens and a phone filter. My design paid homage to the music video for the song "ATM" off of the album, KOD. In the video, the citizens of the town all have large eyes with a spinning "$". The main concept of the idea is that everyone is willing to risk everything to catch the almighty dollar. I included both of these concepts in my piece, so users will have multiple aspects to appreciate in the filter..
Me using my lens at the festival
We were able to have users experience our lens by attaching trackers to the mural. There, users could use Snapchat to scan the trackers be able to try out our lenses. They were also able to share them with others through the app. Users can still try out my scanner just by using the tracker below!
